Great article showing global Destroyer comparisons. It really feels to me that Britain doesn’t get much bang for its buck when it comes to the costings of the Type 45. Perhaps the most worrying attribute is that after 2018 it will purely be only a defensive platform (granted the 4.5 gun has some use, but I’m this is high limited by short range). With things the way they are with heavy budget constraints I really don’t see the class being armed with replacement harpoon or cruise missiles. Maybe now is the time to consider purchasing more off the shelf attack hardware in order to increase capability to give the Type 45 some teeth.

As it stands I really don’t think they’re good enough. We were told they were effective platforms and less were required as they were more capable than anything before. Well that was the excuse for the lack of like for like replacement of the type 42. Currently the type 45’s will need to be deployed in a task group only to have any kind of real effectiveness or role rather than just lip service.

  1. The type 45’s leave a lot to be desired compared to the others in their class. I guess the minimal defence budget is too blame. I wouldn’t fancy their chances.
